This month, Gorilla Doctors was thrilled to receive news from Berggorilla & Regenwald Direkthilfe’s Dr. Angela Meder that an anonymous donor wished to support the conservation of the Virunga Massif’s eastern gorillas. The donor made a generous gift of almost $23,000 to help fund Gorilla Doctors’ field activities in Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC.

Berggorilla & Regenwald Direkthilfe (B&RD) is a membership-based German organization that was established in 1984 to support gorilla conservation. B&RD supports conservation projects in the geographical range of the eastern gorillas (DRC, Uganda, Rwanda) and the range of the Cross River gorillas (Nigeria and Cameroon). As well, the organization has provided urgently needed support to projects working on the conservation of western lowland gorillas. B&RD publishes the bi-annual “Gorilla Journal”, which features articles on gorilla research and conservation activities in the region. Several articles written by Gorilla Doctors field veterinarians have been published in the Gorilla Journal over the years.

Previous to this donation, Berggorilla & Regenwald Direkthilfe’s funding supported the Gorilla Doctors Employee Health Program in Kahuzi Biega National Park, DRC in 2010. Dr. Angela Meder said “we are happy that we can assist the veterinarians and help to ensure their constant care for the Virunga gorillas’ health!” Thank you, Dr. Angela!
