September 24 is World Gorilla Day but every day is a gorilla day at Gorilla Doctors so we are celebrating the entire month of September!

Our veterinarians are on call 365 days a year to provide life-saving care for ill or injured mountain and Grauer’s gorillas in the forests of Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo.

Romaney Berson had a transformative experience the first time she saw mountain gorillas and has been a loyal supporter of Gorilla Doctors’ mission ever since. We sat down with Romaney to discuss her love of gorillas and why she wanted to lead this generous $25,000 match fundraiser.

What’s your gorilla story?

Time stopped when we were with the gorillas. I could have stayed forever with them and been incredibly happy and fulfilled.  All the noise and nonsense of the world dropped away. The importance of nature and wildlife and the interconnectedness of it all was never clearer. The fact that while conservation efforts are helping the eastern gorillas, they are still perilously endangered because of the actions of human beings on a local and global level is heartbreaking. I cannot imagine a world in which gorillas do not exist.

Why do you support Gorilla Doctors?

Don and I first learned of the Gorilla Doctors when we trekked to see the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Western Uganda. Our guide mentioned them as he was taking us to the launching point for the gorilla trek and we were fortunate enough to have a member of the Gorilla Doctor staff come to speak with us that evening. That is how we learned about Gorilla Doctors and the critical role they play in gorilla conservancy. We want to make donations that can make a real difference, and we believe Gorilla Doctors has proven its ability to do that.

There are so many reasons we support and have made the decision to substantially increase our support for Gorilla Doctors:

• – They are the only organization on the ground in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo who provide veterinary care to the endangered mountain gorillas.
• – They balance their intervention responsibly, only providing treatment when absolutely necessary and with the stated goal of helping preserve and hopefully grow the population of eastern gorillas.
• – They help educate the public about the importance of the eastern gorillas and their endangered status and the work Gorilla Doctors does.
• – They recognize the important interconnectedness of the natural world, wildlife and humans and work to help achieve a balance that is good for all.
• – They do very impactful work with a small staff of committed professionals.

We will return to visit the gorillas again, but in the meantime, and for ever after we will continue to support organizations like Gorilla Doctors to the best of our ability to help these wonderful, amazing beings, continue to grace us with their presence.
